BOTOX and Dysport
What is BOTOX and Dysport?
BOTOX® (onabotulinumtoxinA) and Dysport® (abobotulinumtoxinA) are botulinum toxin (botox), is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum.
It is used medically and cosmetically to temporarily paralyze muscle activity. Cosmetically, botox is commonly used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles and fine lines. It is often injected into areas such as the forehead, around the eyes (crow’s feet), and between the eyebrows (glabellar lines).
Botox is used to treat various medical conditions such as chronic migraines, excessive sweating (hyperhidrosis), and certain muscle disorders like cervical dystonia.
What is the treatment like?
Botox injections are typically quick and minimally invasive, often completed in a short office visit. The procedure involves injecting small amounts of Botox into specific muscles using a fine needle. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief, and topical numbing agents are usually not required.
For most individuals, the effects typically last between 3 to 4 months, influenced by factors such as genetics and activity level. You will recognize that the effects are diminishing when wrinkles reappear during various facial expressions. Following a regimen of 3 injections over the first 2 years, many patients observe that the results persist for 6 months or longer, thereby decreasing the frequency of injections or the required dosage.
- Pain or bruising at the injection site.
- Headache, flu-like symptoms.
- Flat brow, droopy eyebrow, or feeling heavy on the forehead: this can occur when treating the forehead wrinkles that are very close to the brows. The risk increases with age and can be minimized by injecting more superficially with microdroplets.
- Spock eyebrows: pronounced outward arching of the eyebrows. It can be corrected by adding a small amount of additional botox to the muscle just above the highest point of the brow arch.
- Temporary Eyelid Droop: This infrequent side effect occurs when the toxin migrates to the muscle responsible for opening the eyelid. It is self-limiting, usually resolving within 4-6 weeks. Management includes applying Apraclonidine eye drops three times daily for several weeks. Additionally, administering a small dose of toxin directly into the eyelid can help alleviate the symptoms.
- History of central nervous system disease such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding
