LASIK/PRK
What Is LASIK?
LASIK, short for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, is a revolutionary laser eye procedure designed to correct myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism, and other forms of imperfections on your cornea. This is commonly known as Laser Vision Correction.
Recent innovations and advancements, such as wavefront optimized and topography guided treatment, allows for truly personalized LASIK and results in unmatched and best visual outcomes.
All LASIK treatments at Laser Eye and Aesthetics are personalized and delivered either with wavefront optimized or topography guided technology to give you the best chance at achieve the best vision possible.
What Is PRK?
PRK or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is an older, but trusted vision correction option that has helped countless individuals achieve clearer and sharper vision, reducing their reliance on glasses or contact lenses. Typically, patients will be considered for PRK when one is not a candidate for LASIK or ICL implantation.
LASIK/PRK Laser Vision Correction: How It Works
Benefits of LASIK/PRK Surgery
LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) is a highly advanced surgical procedure meticulously designed to correct common vision problems, including nearsightedness (myopia), farsightedness (hyperopia), astigmatism, and other corneal imperfections.
While traditional LASIK procedures use a microkeratome (mechanical blade) to create the corneal flap, Laser Eye and Aesthetics employs advanced femtosecond laser technology for enhanced precision. This laser emits ultra short, focused bursts of light, ensuring a meticulously crafted corneal flap with micron-level accuracy. Once the flap is gently lifted, the excimer laser takes center stage, reshaping the cornea to address the specific refractive error. This highly personalized approach corrects your refractive error, enhancing your vision significantly.
LEA’s commitment to precision and patient well-being is evident in the use of femtosecond laser for all of our LASIK treatments, which allows for the creation of a precise corneal flap with micron-level accuracy, with minimal risk of flap-related complications.
Before undergoing LASIK, a comprehensive eye examination is conducted, including evaluating corneal thickness and shape, assessing your refractive error, and examining your overall eye health. This critical step ensures that LASIK is the right and safe solution for you.
While LASIK is a transformative option for many, it’s essential to remember that individual suitability varies. A thorough consultation with our dedicated team, alongside advanced diagnostic equipment, is crucial to determine eligibility and discuss potential risks and benefits. Join us in exploring the world of LASIK, where we’re dedicated to enhancing your vision and transforming your life.
PRK, or Photorefractive Keratectomy, is a time-tested laser eye surgery designed to reshape the cornea’s surface, effectively correcting common vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Unlike LASIK, which involves creating a corneal flap, PRK entails the removal of the corneal epithelium, the outermost layer of the cornea. This makes PRK a suitable option for individuals with thin corneas or specific corneal irregularities, who may not be candidates for LASIK.
During PRK surgery, our skilled ophthalmologists use an excimer laser to precisely reshape the cornea, optimizing the way light enters the eye and is focused on the retina. The entire procedure is performed on the cornea’s surface, without the need for a flap. While PRK offers similar vision correction benefits to LASIK, it has a longer and more involved recovery process than LASIK.
Recovery from PRK typically involves some discomfort and a gradual improvement in vision. Patients may experience blurry vision and sensitivity to light during the initial days following surgery. Unlike LASIK, where vision often stabilizes rapidly, PRK patients may require several days to a few weeks for their vision to fully stabilize. Protective contact lenses (applied by your surgeon immediately after the PRK procedure) and prescribed eye drops are essential during this healing period to facilitate a smooth recovery and ensure the best possible results.

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive surgery, is a procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) in order to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to remove a small amount of tissue from the cornea, thereby altering its shape. By reshaping the cornea, the laser helps to correct the way light enters the eye, improving vision.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during laser eye surgery. Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye, and some patients may feel slight pressure or a sensation of an instrument near the eye. After the procedure, there may be some mild discomfort or dryness, but this can typically be managed with eye drops and subsides within a few days.
While laser eye surgery is generally considered safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks. Possible complications include dry eyes, glare or halos around lights, fluctuating vision, overcorrection or undercorrection of vision, infection, and vision loss (rare). It’s important to discuss these risks with your eye care professional.
The recovery time varies depending on the type of procedure performed. With LASIK, most people experience improved vision within a day or two and can resume normal activities within a week. PRK may require a longer recovery period, with vision gradually improving over several weeks. Your eye care professional will provide specific instructions for your recovery.
