Pre-Operative Consultation
Your Initial Assessment
A pre-operative eye laser consultation assesses a patient’s eye health to gauge their eligibility for different types of eye surgery. It involves reviewing one’s medical history, conducting a comprehensive eye examination, and measure the eyes with the most advanced technologies.
Preparing for the Initial Consultation
Preparing for Laser Eye Surgery
At the initial consultation, precise and advanced eye tests/measurements will be taken. These important examinations and tests will determine your candidacy for different eye procedures. These tests and examinations are extremely important as they provide essential diagnostic data that helps in tailoring the most effective treatment plan to your specific visual needs and health conditions. Ensuring accuracy in these initial assessments is crucial for achieving the best surgical outcomes and patient satisfaction.
The initial consultation would typically take 1-2 hours to complete. Your eyes may be dilated (eye drops are given to enlarge the pupil) therefore, it is recommended that you plan ample time and that you bring someone with you for this appointment. Your companion(s) will be your driver on the day of the appointment and can act as a “second set of ears” during the discussions to help you ask and answer important questions and instructions.
If you are a contact lens user, we would ask you to give yourself a “contact-lens-holiday” prior to the initial consultation. For soft contact lens users, at least one (1) week of no soft contact lens use is required and for hard/hybrid contact lens (RGP) users, at least five (5) weeks of no hard/hybrid contact lens use is required.
You are STRONGLY recommended to use lubrication drops (such as Systane, HyLo, Thealoz Duo, GenTeal, Refresh, etc) 4 times a day for about 3-5 days prior to your pre-op consultation at Laser Eye and Aesthetics. Lubrication drops are not required on the same of your pre-op consultation.
Setting Expectations and Goals
Preparing for Laser Eye Surgery
During the pre-operative consultation, patients are encouraged to openly express their surgical goals and expectations. This collaborative dialogue with our specialist is a fundamental aspect of the consultation process. Patients can discuss their visual needs and what they hope to achieve through different forms of laser eye surgery, whether it’s freedom from glasses and/or improved clarity of vision.
Our specialist takes ample time to provide detailed information about the various laser eye surgery options available. Each option will be carefully explained, with a focus on the associated benefits and potential risks. Patients are empowered to make informed decisions about their treatment plan based on their individual preferences and visual needs. This informative discussion ensures that patients have a comprehensive understanding of the available procedures and can confidently choose the one that aligns best with their goals.
During the consultation, our specialists will work closely with you to determine the best procedure for your eyes, lifestyles, and visual needs. We offer all forms of laser vision correction, cornea and lens based surgeries, so you may be introduced to new technologies and new procedures.
In addition to these discussions, the pre-operative consultation will encompass a range of advanced diagnostic tests aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of your ocular health. These tests are extensive and performed with the most advanced technologies. They may include (but not limited to) the following:
- Corneal topography and tomography- provides insights into the corneal shape and curvature.
- Corneal wavefront analysis – assesses the eye’s unique optical properties and determines the higher-order-aberrations of the eye.
- Corneal epithelial mapping- determines the health and the anatomy of the corneal epithelial layer (the most superficial surface of the eye).
- Corneal optical biometry- measures the length of the eye, inner eye structure position/tilt, and the curvature of the ocular surface.
- Optical Coherence Tomography-determines the health of inner eye structures (such as the macula and the optic nerve).
- Super high frequency ultrasound bio-microscopy (UBM) visualize and measures inner eye structures.
- Visual acuity and refraction assessments – gauges current visual function and prescription.
The results of these tests are invaluable in helping the specialist determine the patient’s suitability/candidacy for different laser eye surgeries. By thoroughly assessing the patient’s ocular health and visual characteristics, the specialist can tailor the surgical approach to optimize the chances of a successful outcome. Furthermore, these assessments assist in identifying any pre-existing conditions or factors that may impact the success of the surgery.
Patients are encouraged to actively engage in the consultation by asking questions and seeking clarification on any concerns they may have. This collaborative approach ensures that patients are well informed, confident in their decision-making, and fully prepared for their upcoming laser eye surgery.

Laser eye surgery, also known as refractive surgery, is a procedure that uses a laser to reshape the cornea (the clear front part of the eye) in order to correct common vision problems such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. During the procedure, a laser is used to remove a small amount of tissue from the cornea, thereby altering its shape. By reshaping the cornea, the laser helps to correct the way light enters the eye, improving vision.
Most patients experience minimal discomfort during laser eye surgery. Anaesthetic eye drops are used to numb the eye, and some patients may feel slight pressure or a sensation of an instrument near the eye. After the procedure, there may be some mild discomfort or dryness, but this can typically be managed with eye drops and subsides within a few days.
While laser eye surgery is generally considered safe, like any surgical procedure, it carries some risks. Possible complications include dry eyes, glare or halos around lights, fluctuating vision, overcorrection or undercorrection of vision, infection, and vision loss (rare). It’s important to discuss these risks with your eye care professional.
The recovery time varies depending on the type of procedure performed. With LASIK, most people experience improved vision within a day or two and can resume normal activities within a week. PRK may require a longer recovery period, with vision gradually improving over several weeks. Your eye care professional will provide specific instructions for your recovery.
